Canyon Lake, Texas Assembly Performances TCA Touring Artist Storyteller and author Tim Tingle has written six books based on the oral traditions of his native Choctaw Nation and his native state, Texas. Crossing Bok Chitto, Mr. Tingle’s first children’s book, is on the 2008-2009 Texas Bluebonnet Award Master List. His lively performances include Native American flute and drum music, as well as songs in the Choctaw language. Mr. Tingle performs over 100 different Native American stories, and the stories for each of his performances are chosen according to the grade-level of the audience: Early Elementary (Grades K-2) Stories may include:
“Grandma Spider Brings t “First Robin”- a Lakota girl faces her troubles and gains self-assurance. “White Wolf”- two Sioux children find a mysterious protector. “Coyote and the Rock”- filled with audience participation, this humorous Salish tale teaches respect for the little ones.
Upper Elementary (Grades 3-5) Stories may include: “Crossing Bok Chitto”- A story of friendship and freedom as a young Choctaw girl aids an escaping slave family. “The Bowl”- A Navajo story of a hand of evil unleashed when a bowl is stolen from an ancient cave.
Middle School (Grades 6-8) Stories are selected based on teacher’s requests to compliment curriculum. A good sampling of Indian ghost stories are always appreciated by the Middle School audience!
High School (Grades 9-12) Stories are selected based on teacher’s requests to compliment curriculum. High School audiences appreciate stories about modern Indians overcoming obstacles in life, as well as Mr. Tingle’s fascinating account of Indian boarding schools.

Mr. Tingle has written six books based on the oral traditions of his native Choctaw Nation and his native state, Texas. Crossing Bok Chitto, Mr. Tingle’s first children’s book, is on the 2008-2009 Texas Bluebonnet Award Master List. Workshops are offered for upper elementary, middle school, and high school students and are tailored to meet the needs of the individual class.
Workshop Cost: $300 for ½ day (up to 3 classes may participate) $600 for full day (up to 6 classes may participate) Participant limit: 30 per class Session length: 45 minutes per class |
