“Steel Sound”                                                       

Grades: 3-8                                                                

Popular local musician Paul Watson will introduce students to the wonders of steel drumming. Originating in the West Indies, the steel drum has become one of the most popular instruments of the 20th century. Made from 55-gallon barrels, these drums create intriguing music. In addition to the musical aspect of this performance, Mr. Watson shares with students the scientific and cultural importance of steel drumming. Workshops are available for percussion classes.

 “Scottish Bagpipes”                 

Grades: 4-6                                   

Paul Watson brings to life his Scottish heritage through the history of Scottish regalia and bagpipes. A former Pipe Major of The Texas Highland Pipes and Drums of Lubbock, he shares with students the structure and science of the bagpipe and then demonstrates a variety of bagpipes, both small and large. As students watch him play classic Scottish music, they discover that they have many questions regarding sound, science, and music.
