Classroom Workshops

“Math and Old Masters”

Math + Art = a compelling, educational arts experience! Professional visual artist and art educator Julio Suarez demonstrates for students how math and art, seemingly so different, are in fact closely related. After sharing pictures of famous paintings and instructing children in the basics of portraiture and drawing technique, Julio teaches them how to use a ruler and oil pastels to recreate the works of masters like da Vinci, Van Gogh, and Matisse. Students will work with math and art techniques to create an original piece of art that resembles a master work.

 

Workshop Cost: $300 for ˝ day (up to 3 classes may  participate)

                              $525 for full day (up to 6 classes may participate)

Supply Fee: $2 per child               

Participant limit: 25 per class                                                                                                                                                                          

Workshop length: 60 minutes

 

“Cartooning with Julio”

In this highly interactive workshop, professional visual artist Julio Suarez integrates history, science, language arts, math...this innovative program can incorporate a myriad of curriculum subjects! Julio encourages children to strengthen skills in visual communication as they create cartoon panels stressing sequence and a sense of humor. He teaches students the basics of cartooning, emphasizing additional elements that go beyond drawing technique, including imagination, creativity, and self-expression. The students’ culminating projects can vary, from the creation of original comic strips to comic book cover designs.

“Drawing Conclusions”

Grades: 3-5

Residency

In this five-day residency, professional visual artist and educator Julio Suarez will lead students as they conceive, write, and illustrate a storyline and draw a storyboard that uses the Humpty Dumpty theme as a basis for creating a new prologue, epilogue, or adjunct plot for the story.

Students engage in:

• Drawing exercises with demonstrations of basic cartooning skills;

• Finding inspiration in book illustrations, graphic novels, comic books, comics, cartoons, and storyboards from film and animation;

• Cooperative learning to generate an adjunct storyline using Humpty Dumpty as the prompt;

• Drawing storyboards to illustrate the sequential action of plot lines;

• Presenting a viewing and spoken word reading related to the storyboard.

This exciting residency uses the visual art and literary genre of graphic novels to ignite students’ imaginations and motivate them to read and write.

 

Residency Cost: $1,500 for ˝ day (up to 3 classes may participate)

                           $2,625` for full day (up to 6 classes may participate)

Supply Fee: $2 per child               

Participant limit: 25 per class                                                                                                                                          

Residency length: 5 days, 45 minutes daily per class.

Available dates: March 16-20, 2009. Other dates available upon request.
