In this three-day residency, students use the arts of journaling and bookmaking to learn about the United States’ westward expansion and pioneer life. Led by renowned art educator Joyce Terrell, students relive such pioneer activities as leather stamping, basket weaving, paper making, and book binding. Various writing activities about life in pre-industrial America are incorporated into the students’ handmade journals.
This residency also can be adapted to the colonial period. Both the westward expansion and colonial period residencies will be planned with participating teachers. These are great experiences for integrating social studies, literature, math, and art.
