“Glass Harp Music”

Grades: 3-8

Assembly Performance

Brien Engel is one of the few people in the country helping to revive and promote the enchanting art of glass music. His instrument, a glass harp, consists of 50 water-filled glasses of different sizes. He plays these by carefully rubbing the rims with his moistened fingers. Whether playing simple melodies or complex and ethereal harmonies, Mr. Engel creates an unmistakable sound. His extensive repertoire includes popular songs, jazz standards, and classical music. Students learn the history of water-tuned and glass music and related science concepts of physics and sound. They also experiment with different ways of making music while developing their own creativity.
