ARTS EDUCATION

Maximizing Benefits of Young Audiences Programs

How can I maximize the benefits of a YA program?

Select a program that aligns with your curriculum needs.

Schedule a program for your class. Although auditorium performances are entertaining and educational, the maximum learning occurs in a classroom setting where the artist interacts personally with the students.

Utilize the study guide and its curriculum connections before and after the program.

Schedule your YA programs to align with the study of certain topics.

Participate in the programs with your students.  Participation gives you the experience necessary to reinforce the students’ learning later in the classroom.

How can a YA experience potentially help my students on the TAKS test?

A number of widely recognized studies show that students who use the arts in their learning often not only perform better on standardized tests but also are more engaged in learning.

Each of the YA programs has a study guide that closely aligns it with TEKS standards.  Use of these connections will help reinforce curriculum concepts.

Since the YA programs make learning fun, your students are engaged in the educational experience.

What is the purpose of the study guide?

The study guide is designed to maximize the connection of the YA program with your curriculum.

In the study guide you will find activities for before and after the visit in which you can use the program to reinforce learning in your grade-level TEKS.

How do I use the study guide?

Become familiar with the artist and the intent of the program yourself.

Share your knowledge with the students prior to the program.

Share with your students the performance expectations so that they are able to give their entire attention to the program and maximize their learning.

Go over the vocabulary with your students prior to the program.

Do at least one of the pre-visit activities with your students.  You can select the activity according to your curriculum needs.

After the program, do at least two of the post-visit activities with your students, according to your curriculum needs.

Education World
In the spring of 1996, the founders of Education World recognized the need for a Web site that would make the Internet easier for educators to use. They wanted to create a home for educators on the Internet, a place where teachers could gather and share ideas. They wanted to create a complete online resource where educators could start each day to find the lesson plans and research materials they were looking for. The result is Education World, the Educator's Best Friend, a resource that includes:a search engine for educational Web sites only, a place where educators can find information without searching the entire Internet; original content, including lesson plans, practical information for educators, information on how to integrate technology in the classroom, and articles written by education experts; site reviews; daily features and columns; teacher and principal profiles; Wire Side Chats with the important names in education; employment listings.
