Akin Babatunde - Harlem Renaissance

Mr. Babatunde’s touring show, Of Ebony Embers-Vignettes of the Harlem Renaissance, is a musical theatre piece that explores the life and times of African Americans who helped shape the Harlem Renaissance.   Described as a “joyful exploration of African American music and poetry of the 1920s and 30s”, this program portrays three of the great poets of the period: Langston Hughes, Countee Cullen and Claude McKay, as well as the renowned painter Aaron Douglas. The musical score is drawn from great composers of the Jazz Age (Ellington, Strayhorn, Morton) as well as African American composers of classical music (Jeffrey Mumford, George Walker).
